NC Memorial Day Case Study

Background

The NC Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee exists to honor the service and sacrifice of military service members while preserving a long-standing community tradition.

The committee brings together community members, volunteers, sponsors, participants, and local organizations to support annual Memorial Day observances and related activities. A strong digital presence is essential to communicating event information, recognizing sponsors, coordinating participation, and supporting community engagement throughout the year.

Challenge

The organization lost its previous website and digital presence following the passing of the volunteer responsible for maintaining it.

Without a sustainable solution, important organizational information, communication channels, and online visibility were at risk. The committee needed a modern platform that could be maintained by future volunteers and leadership while supporting ongoing outreach and event planning efforts.

Key considerations included:

  • Restoring the organization's online presence

  • Establishing long-term digital continuity

  • Creating a solution that future volunteers could maintain

  • Improving public access to information

  • Supporting volunteer recruitment and participation

  • Recognizing sponsors and community partners

  • Preserving the organization's history and mission

Assessment & Recommendations

An assessment of organizational needs identified an opportunity not only to replace the previous website, but to establish a stronger and more sustainable digital foundation.

Recommendations included:

  • Acquiring dedicated organizational domains

  • Establishing professional website hosting

  • Implementing a modern, user-friendly platform

  • Creating a clear information architecture

  • Developing pathways for volunteer engagement

  • Creating sponsorship and community partner recognition features

  • Designing a website capable of supporting future leadership transitions

The recommended approach prioritized sustainability, accessibility, ease of administration, and long-term organizational ownership.

Implementation

Following approval of the modernization plan, implementation focused on creating a comprehensive public-facing website designed to support both current and future organizational needs.

Work included:

  • Digital strategy development

  • Domain acquisition recommendations

  • Hosting platform recommendations

  • Website architecture and navigation design

  • Content organization and page development

  • Volunteer engagement pathways

  • Participant application processes

  • Sponsor and community partner recognition features

  • Event communication infrastructure

  • Full website implementation and launch

Special attention was given to creating a platform that could be easily maintained by future volunteers and committee leadership.

Outcomes

The project successfully restored the committee's digital presence and established a sustainable platform for future growth and community engagement.

Key outcomes included:

  • Launch of a new public-facing website

  • Restoration of organizational online visibility

  • Establishment of dedicated domains and hosting

  • Improved access to organizational information

  • Enhanced volunteer and participant engagement opportunities

  • Formalized sponsor recognition and community partner visibility

  • Improved organizational continuity and sustainability

  • Creation of a foundation for future website growth and maintenance

Lasting Impact

The NC Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee project demonstrated that digital modernization is not simply about building a website. It is about preserving institutional knowledge, strengthening organizational continuity, and ensuring future volunteers and leaders have the tools needed to continue the mission.

The project reinforced a core principle of the Digital Modernization initiative:

Strong organizations depend on sustainable systems. By creating a stable digital foundation, organizations can focus more effectively on serving their communities and preserving the missions that matter most.
